The brief

A winery wedding in late August: Chateau Artwine, Kakheti, around fifty guests. The estate was chosen because it holds the entire day — getting ready, ceremony, dinner and dancing — without a single transfer.

The Caucasus ridge was to be the main view of the day. Everything else grew from that: light white flowers instead of heavy structures, and a palette that gives the landscape the leading part.

Fifty guests, all close ones. So the evening had two conditions: one shared table instead of a scatter of round ones, and dancing under the open sky into the night.

The making

The morning in the chateau suites moved slowly, by design: preparations, family, a welcome sign with two names at the entrance. The evening programme gave nothing away yet; that morning belonged to the family.

The lawn at Artwine lets a ceremony face the chateau or the mountains; we turned it to the mountains. The arch of white garden flowers stood facing the ridge and the guests were seated toward the same horizon, so the vows were spoken against the Caucasus. Her father led her across the open grass, and after the ceremony the guests met the couple with a corridor of petals.

While dinner was being laid on the terrace, the couple had an hour of their own: a walk along a working row of vines under an already low sun. The schedule gives it exactly twenty minutes, held as strictly as the ceremony itself: the pause lets the couple catch their breath and keeps the evening from rushing.

Instead of scattered round tables, one continuous table ran the length of the terrace under the carved wooden gallery: fifty people, one line of candles and wine. A table like that keeps dinner one shared conversation: toasts carry without a microphone, and nobody is seated at a far table.

At night the lawn became the third scene of the day: a live band, a dancefloor between the tables, the guests at the very centre of the evening. The ceremony arch took a second role: the cake was cut beneath it, a red heart on white linen under the same white flowers.
